Voltage of zener diode to protect ECU in a car?
Does anyone know the answer or what formula I can use to find the answer here?

Well, the battery voltage in an auto is nominally 12 volts, but can be 14-15 volts when charging. So the zener has to be higher than that. Given that zeners have a tolerance plus a temperature coefficient, you need a voltage at least 20% above 15 volts, or 18 volts.
BUT, there is the load dump problem. If you accidently run the car with the battery disconnected, the voltage can go up to 40 volts or so. If that could be a problem, you need a 50 volt zener.

The Zender diode is a type of diode that is used in reverse bias. It is based on the avalanche effect of a n-p junction.
Below a certain voltage, called Zender voltage, the diode does not conduct. The more the reverse bias tries to increase, the more current flows through the P-N junction. This effectively prevents the reverse voltage from exceeding 50 V. The Zener voltage is indicated by the abrupt rise in reverse current as the reverse bias increases.
Zener diodes often provide the simplest and least expensive alternative of regulating voltage. Power sources for solid-state equipment commonly employ Zener diode regulators, as voltage fluctuations are damaging to IC chips, microprocessors, etc.
