Zener Diode Circuit Problem?

a zener circuit with the zener diode pointing outwards with the following data.

10<=Vs<=15
RL=6 ohms
Vz=6V

how do i determine Rs and Pzmax?

Where's the circuit diagram ??!! I suppose Vs is the variable supply voltage that has to be regulated, RL is Load resistance, & you are having a zener diode of 6 V. u want to determine max pwr handled by the zener diode & I guess wat u mean by Rs is the resistance in series with zener. You also didnt specify the current rating of the zener diode.

supposing RL to be in parallel with Zener, current thru RL= 1amp. voltage across Rs= 4 to 9 V. Supposing 20 mA current to be reqd by the zener to properly regulate O/P voltage, total current thru Rs= (1+.020) amp. So, Rs= 4 V / (1.020) = 3.92 ohms for Vs=10v

but when Vs= 15V, I thru Rs = (15-6)/3.92 = 2.29 amps ! i.e current thru zener wll be 1.29 amps. This is TOTALLY impractical !

anyways, Pzmax = 6*1.29 = 7.77 W

substitute for zener diode?

I can't find an 8.1v zener diode locally. I need to know if there is a regular diode that would work. BTW, using it in a circuit to drop 12v to 7.5v.
amperage is 300mA

If you need to drop 12V to 7.5V then you need a 7.5V Zener and NOT an 8.1V Zener.

You can use a reversed biased 5.1V Zener in Series with several forward biased diodes.

Each forward biased diode will drop 0.65V

Using 3 or 4 diodes in series will get you just over or under 7.5V. If this is close enough than this is a simple solution.

Don't forget the series limiting resistor which will drop 4.5V at 300mA.
12v - 7.5 = 4.5V
4.5 / 0.3 = 15Ohm
4.5 * 0.3 = 1.35 Watts
1.35 * 1.5 safety factor = 2Watt

So you need a 15Ohm resistor that can handle at least 2 watts

If you need to be dead on then consider using an LM317 adjustable linear voltage regulator
