Zener Diode Voltage Temperature

Why is 5,6V the threshold discriminating which effect appear mostly in reverse biased diodes?


I've seen many times a general rule stating that
"A reversely biased diode permits current, due to 2 effects:
-The Zener effect if the applied voltage is LESS than 5,6V
-The avalanche breakdown if the applied voltage is MORE than 5,6V"

Moreover, Wikipedia entry for Zener diode states:
"In a 5.6 V diode, the two effects occur together and their temperature coefficients neatly cancel each other out, thus the 5.6 V diode is the component of choice in temperature-critical applications."

Where does this 5.6V comes from, anyway?!

The two mechanisms are completely different. Zener effect uses tunneling whereas avalanche is somewhat different. Avalanche breakdown can occur within insulating or semiconducting solids, liquids, or gases when the electric field in the material is great enough to accelerate free electrons to the point that, when they strike atoms in the material, they can knock other electrons free: the number of free electrons is thus increased rapidly as newly generated particles become part of the process.

It just so happens that the two are complementary at about 5.6v with the positive temperature co-efficient of the avalanche mechanism canceling out the negative temperature co-efficient of the zener effect.

Transistors base emitter voltage exhibits the same characteristic and many processes aim to set the reverse breakdown voltage to about 5.6v which simplifies the ic design allowing reference voltages with minimal temperature drift.
