Zener Diode Resistor
Zener Diode Resistor
If I have a 5.1v 1W zener diode, and I need it to only output 4.7 volts, what type of resistor do I need?

There is no actual constant line voltage... But I need to cap the maximum sending voltage at 4.7volt and nothing higher.

Does this make sense?

It would make more sense to go out and buy a 4.7 V Zener diode, which would actually be cheaper than cobbling a circuit that outputs a reliable 4.7 V from a 5.1 V input

Zener diode as regulator

Semisonductors.....................................?

in a zener regulated power supply a Zener diode with V=6.0 V is used for regulation. The load current is to be 4.0 mA and the unregulated input is 10 V. What should be the value of series resistor?

Well i have found the voltage across the resistor but how to find the current? Pls provide the needed explaination.

And one more thing -
What is the difference between avalanche breakdown and zener breakdown?
LET ME TELL YOU ABBY IT'S NOT MY HOMEWORK...I AM PREPARING FOR EXAMS AND HAVE SOME DOUBT. WHICH I WANTED TO CLEAR OUT!

Avalanche breakdown occurs when the reverse bias electric field imparts enough energy to the thermally generated carrier such that when it collides with the crystal ion in its way, it disrupts the covalent bond and creates a new hole - electron pair, this process is cumulative , hence the name avalanche breakdown.
Zener breakdown occurs when the reverse bias electric field across the p-n junction is sufficiently high to tear out the bound electron of its covalent bond.

The prob is very simple ; apply kirchoff's law ;
( 10 - 6 ) V = 4mA *x
x= 1kilo ohms
Hope it was helpful :)
