how to "read" the markings on a zener diode?

i have a diode with the numbers 1N, 48, PH what do they mean and how can i figure what they are on different zener diodes?

It has been my experience that zener diodes from different manufacturers don't really have a consistent "code" which can be relied upon to indicate the value.
I have found that often the voltage rating is incorporated into the part number - but not always.
The best method is to have the actual schematic of the circuit and the part will be clearly indicated - along with any generic substitutes.
Short of that, try and cross reference the part on the NTE website or just Google the number stamped on the component.
The number you refer to in your question doesn't cross in any of my references - and 1N48 (w/o the "PH") crosses to a Ge quick switching diode - not a zener, so that's not a good sign that a cross will be easily found without the data from the manufacturer.
