Zener Diode Kits
Does anyone know what a zener diode looks like?
I got my electronics kit all mixed up. I have a glass something. I assume its the zener diode I need. It's gass and has two black strips - Is this the zener diode?
They can all look the same.
But you can test it.
You need a DC power supply (any Amp. will do) preferably with 24VDC or more (just in case it is a Zener diode - you want to know its breakdown voltage), a 3.3kOhm .... 8.2kOhm
resistor (1/8 Watt), and a Volt Meter.
You make a circuit, + 24V to resistor, resistor to Diode-in-question, and back to minus 24V.
Then you measure the voltage across the diode, once with the rings towards minus, then reverse.
A) if you get <0.5 Volt one way, and full 24V the other, then you have a Germanium Diode
B) if you get >0.5 and <1 Volt one way, and full 24V the other, then you have a Silicon Diode
C) if you get anything between >1 and <24Volt one way, and almost zero the other, then you have a Zener Diode
D) if you get almost Zero Volt both ways, then you have a "fried" diode (or a micro fuse).
E) if you get 24 Volt both ways, then it may not be a diode at all..
