Zener Diode Biasing
Plz.... help me out with this doubt?
When a diode is connected in reverse biased condition can zener and avalanche breakdown occur simultaneously?
If not why?
of course they cannot , as they are diff conditons ......... as in zener breakdown (BD) happens due to high electric field , where as avlance happens due to high velocity of charge carriers ........... in zener BD HAPPENS AT LOW VOLtage in avlance it happens at high voltage ....

If you forward-bias a Zener diode, it behaves just like any other forward-biased diode. (This phenomenon is exploited in some circuits, e.g. capacitor-zener power supplies.) If you reverse-bias it, and apply more than a certain voltage, the Zener diode tries to maintain a constant voltage across itself by adjusting the amount of current that passes through it.
Actually, rectifier diodes behave this way too if you exceed their PIV rating; but the breakdown voltage is rarely exact, and demonstrating the phenomenon might well require the use of dangerous voltages. LEDs, and the base-emitter junctions of most transistors, usually break down somewhere between 5 and 6 volts. They will not even be damaged by this, as long as you keep the current (and therefore the power dissipation) low.
