Yag Harmonics
Calculate emitted stokes?
Raman shifting is used to generate a different wavelength from that of the original
laser beam. Calculate the emitted (Stokes) wavelength of a Raman shifting cell from
the 2nd harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (λ = 355 nm) if the cell is filled with D2 at a high
pressure. The vibration of D2 occurs at approximately 2940 cm-1.
hν(i) → D2 → ↔D-D↔ ν(D2) → hν(i) + h(ν(i) - ν(D2))
h(ν(i) - ν(D2)) is the Stokes emission and is stronger than the anti-Stokes line h(ν(i) +ν(D2))
Need to get 2940 cm-1 (1/λ) into nm (10^-9 m) compatible with the exciting source:
ν(D2) = (1/2940) × 1×10^7 = 3401 nm
The Stokes line is then 355 - 3401= 3046 nm to the left of the exciting wavelength and these days with Lasers is easily detected.
It has been many years since I worked with Raman spectra, but I think this is OK!
