Laser Surgery by Evelyn, Columba Sara [Paperback] $65.33 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Laser surgery is surgery using a laser to cut tissue instead of a scalpel. Examples include the use of a laser scalpel in otherwise conventional surgery, and soft tissue laser surgery, in which the laser beam vaporizes soft tissue with high water content. Laser resurfacing is a technique in which molecular bonds of a material are dissolved by a laser. Laser surgery is commonly used on the eye. Techniques used include LASIK, which is used to correct near and farsightedness in vision, and photorefractive keratectomy, a procedure which permanently reshapes the cornea using an excimer laser to remove a small amount of tissue. Soft Tissue Laser Surgery $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In soft tissue laser surgery, interaction of laser light with the soft tissue provides a special approach to surgery. A highly focused laser beam vaporizes the soft tissue with the high water content. Laser can make very small incisions when the beam is focused on the tissue (focal spot size can be as small as 0.1 mm, but the most widely used in practice is 0.4 mm). When the beam is defocused, the intensity of the laser light on the tissue diminishes, and it can be used for cauterization of small blood vessels and lymphatics, therefore decreases postoperative swellings. Excimer Laser $95.59 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An excimer laser (sometimes, and more correctly, called an exciplex laser) is a form of ultraviolet laser which is commonly used in eye surgery and semiconductor manufacturing. The term excimer is short for excited dimer, while exciplex is short for excited complex. An excimer laser typically uses a combination of an inert gas (argon, krypton, or xenon) and a reactive gas (fluorine or chlorine). Under the appropriate conditions of electrical stimulation, a pseudomolecule called an excimer (or in case of noble gas halides, exciplex) is created, which can only exist in an energized state and can give rise to laser light in the ultraviolet range. The UV light from an excimer laser is well absorbed by biological matter and organic compounds. Rather than burning or cutting material, the excimer laser adds enough energy to disrupt the molecular bonds of the surface tissue, which effectively disintegrates into the air in a tightly controlled manner through ablation rather than burning. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 172 Publication Date: 2010/06/26 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.39 inches |

Strabismus Surgery $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Strabismus surgery is surgery on the extraocular muscles to correct the misalignment of the eyes. With approximately 1.2 million procedures each year, extraocular muscle surgery is the third most common eye surgery in the United States. Strabismus surgery is a one day procedure. The patient only spends few hours in the hospital with minimal preoperative preparation. The average duration of the surgery is variable according to the number of muscles operated. On average, every muscle operated takes 1015 minutes. In case of reoperations it may take longer. After surgery, pain is not significant. The patient should expect some soreness and redness, however pain killers are rarely needed. Again, in cases of reoperations, more pain is expected. Resection of the muscles is more painful in the post operative period than recession. It also leaves redness that lasts longer and may cause some vomiting in the early post operative period. The Many Benefits Of Laser Surgery
When people think of surgery the first thing that comes to mind is the knife. The thought of being cut can turn many people off from getting much needed medical procedures. With the advancements in medical technology and the advent of laser surgery, more people can feel at ease when contemplating major surgery or a simple cosmetic procedure.
One of the major benefits of laser surgery is that the scarring normally left is minimized. This can be quite beneficial if the area to be operated on is in view on a regular basis such as the arm, leg or even the face. The fear of being left with a large ugly scar is removed, thereby allowing a possibly much needed procedure to go that much smoother with a patient.
Laser surgery is a much more precise form of operating than traditional methods. This may be used to seal off blood vessels to help reduce blood loss during surgery along with being able to help seal off infected areas such as tumors and help to prevent spreading. This is all done with minimal damage to the surrounding area and allows for the complete removal of some tumors too.
The other advantage to laser surgery is that it may be used to seal nerve endings. This is especially helpful in reducing pain in areas that have undergone recent surgery. This makes it a great alternative to pain medications and their side effects although this type of surgery is not without its own side effects.
The use of lasers is not only for major medical procedures. There are many different cosmetic applications. The laser can be used to remove unwanted warts, birthmarks and other skin blemishes all while leaving little to no scarring. Tattoo removal is yet another benefit of this type of surgery and this is done leaving minimal scarring also.
There are more than a few types of lasers used for surgery. These include the carbon dioxide (CO) laser, pulsed dye laser and the YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) laser. Each of these has a specific use and the color of the laser beam itself directly corresponds to the intended surgical purpose and the color of the tissue being treated.
This type of surgery, as with any other medical procedure, should be researched thoroughly before any decision is made. Along with consulting a physician, many websites online have the necessary information to allow you to make an informed decision. These can be easily found by doing a brief online search.
There are also many different websites that will have backgrounds on available doctors that are trained in the use of lasers and offer these different procedures. Dependent on the type of procedure you are considering, the Internet may also help to locate a specialist in the area that may be consulted in person. The Internet holds a vast amount of information on laser surgery and its many applications and unlocking it simply takes a few clicks of the mouse and some time to read.
