Wedge Probe
Wedge Probe
What is a wedge probe ?Where can I get more details about it ?

The wedge probe (see below) is a simple, rugged, two- or three-dimensional probe that consists of a triangular, prismatic probe. It can be used to measure the static pressure. It has been made with various angles, the most popular being between about 8 deg. and 30 deg. The upper limit to the useful operating range of Mach numbers is a function of the angle and the flow pitch angle. It is lower for probes with greater included angles. Narrower wedges are, however less sensitive to flow angle but they do offer better accuracy in terms of static pressure measurement.

Here's the complete detail with its illustration:

Rated: NRSynopsis: That hipster ring special agent Hugh Lockwood wears? It's a camera, transmitting image and sound of his surroundings. It's also a scanner, detecting telltale changes in pulse or other biometric readings of himself and the people around him. The ring and more electronic devices - some embedded - keep Lockwood linked with Probe Control, where experts and banks of computers provide instant mission-critical warnings, intel, even language translations. Hugh O'Brian portrays Lockwood and Burgess Meredith is his mission director in Probe, a telefilm that has Lockwood on a quest to recover priceless diamonds lost since World War II. O'Brian and Meredith reprised their roles in Search, the 1972-73 TV series inspired by the film.

Minnesota wedge tornado intercept!!! June 17, 2010

What is wedge pressure? What's 'wedgy' about it? and why don't we measure it through subclavian/femoral artery?

Central venous pressure is when we pass venous catheter into right atrium and there the probe picks up roughly 3mmHg pressure, the central venous pressure. In contrast, to estimate left atrial pressure we pass the probe all the way down along pulmonary artery to its most distal end near the lung. What's on the other side of the lung if we were to keep going (but couldn't ofcourse) is the left atrium. That's the wedge pressure which measures around 8mmHg.

My questions are (1) why is it called wedge? where's the 'wedge'? (2) Why can't we just go up femoral artery or subclavian artery, through aortic valve, into left ventricle, then through mitral valve to reach directly into left atrium? that'll be more accurate wouldn't it?

An intravascular pressure recording obtained when a recording catheter is wedged in–ie, occludes–a vessel, which allows assessment of cardiopulmonary pressure gradients.
the difficulty of introducing a cath against the pressure gradient and it is against the flow, measurement may become inaccurate, other thing is the valve opens towards the ventricle. i think you got both.
