Wave Optics

how sound signals are converted into electro magnetic signals for communication through fiber optics?
Now-a-days tele-communications are using fiber optics to send signals. But what is the mechanism behind the converstion of sound waves into light waves?
Light is just another part of the electro-magnetic spectrum, the same as radio waves. The light waves can be modulated and demodulated, either analog or digital, in the same fashion as other radio waves that bring you AM and FM radio as well as television.

Optics $143.39 Optics is the branch of physics which studies the behavior and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behavior of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. Because light is an electromagnetic wave, other forms of electromagnetic radiation such as Xrays, microwaves, and radio waves exhibit similar properties. Most optical phenomena can be accounted for using the classical electromagnetic description of light. Complete electromagnetic descriptions of light are, however, often difficult to apply in practice. Practical optics is usually done using simplified models. The most common of these, geometric optics, treats light as a collection of rays that travel in straight lines and bend when they pass through or reflect from surfaces. Physical optics is a more comprehensive model of light, which includes wave effects such as diffraction and interference that cannot be accounted for in geometric optics. Historically, the raybased model of light was developed first, followed by the wave model of light. Guided Wave Nonlinear Optics $779.05 This book is the first unified presentation of guided wave nonlinear optics. The path from the original nonlinear optical experiments based on multimegawatt lasers in bulk materials to the recent breakthroughs using milliwatt laser powers in guided wave configurations is clearly outlined. The chapters cover both the theoretical framework of the field and applications to basic scientific research, optimal communications, and technical instrumentation. Specific topics developed include nonlinear interactions using integrated optical guides, surface waves, and optical fibers, as well as the related topic of fiber and integrated optical lasers and amplifiers. Recent developments concerning solitons and solitonbased devices are presented in detail. For each topic care is taken to ensure an heuristic introduction in order to facilitate the transition toward stateoftheart advanced research material presented by recognized world leaders in these fields. Nonlinear Optics $103.97 Nonlinear optics, the study of the nonlinear effects associated with the propagation of light through matter, is so scientifically rich and technologically promising that it is destined to become one of the most important areas of scientific research into the next century. This book is written for graduate students or anyone interested in getting a unified picture of this emerging field. Nonlinear Optics allows the reader to see all these manifestations of the lightmatter interaction as part of the unified whole. Professors Newell and Moloney show how to use these simple equations both to gain a better understanding of the physical processes involved and to deal with the practical applications. Specific topics include: the notion of the nonlinear refractive index and selfphase modulation, the propagation and use of nonlinear waves and solitons in optical fibers and waveguides, twoandthree lasers, optical bistability, the interaction of co and counterpropagating beams, stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, and selfinduced transparency. The final chapter discusses mathematical and computational methods such as multiple time scaling, linear and nonlinear wave propagation, solitons, numerical methods, and useful software packages. Dispersion (Optics) $70.1 In optics, dispersion is the phenomenon in which the phase velocity of a wave depends on its frequency, or alternatively when the group velocity depends on the frequency. Media having such a property are termed dispersive media. Dispersion is sometimes called chromatic dispersion to emphasize its wavelengthdependent nature, or groupvelocity dispersion (GVD) to emphasize the role of the group velocity. The most familiar example of dispersion is probably a rainbow, in which dispersion causes the spatial separation of a white light into components of different wavelengths (different colors). However, dispersion also has an effect in many other circumstances: for example, GVD causes pulses to spread in optical fibers, degrading signals over long distances; also, a cancellation between groupvelocity dispersion and nonlinear effects leads to soliton waves. Geometric Optics on Phase Space $253.31 Symplectic geometry, well known as the basic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics, is also the foundation of optics. In fact, optical systems (geometric or wave) have an even richer symmetry structure than mechanical ones (classical or quantum). The symmetries underlying the geometric model of light are based on the symplectic group. Geometric Optics on Phase Space develops both geometric optics and group theory from first principles in their Hamiltonian formulation on phase space. This treatise provides the mathematical background and also collects a host of useful methods of practical importance, particularly the fractional Fourier transform currently used for image processing. The reader will appreciate the beautiful similarities between Hamiltons mechanics and this approach to optics. The appendices link the geometry thus introduced to wave optics through Lie methods. The book addresses researchers and graduate students. Plane Wave $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In the physics of wave propagation, a plane wave (also spelled planewave) is a constantfrequency wave whose wavefronts (surfaces of constant phase) are infinite parallel planes of constant amplitude normal to the phase velocity vector. The wavefronts of a plane wave traveling in 3space A pseudocolored upwardtraveling plane wave in 2space By extension, the term is also used to describe waves that are approximately plane waves in a localized region of space. For example, a localized source such as an antenna produces a field that is approximately a plane wave in its farfield region. Equivalently, for propagation in a homogeneous medium over lengthscales much longer than the wavelength, the rays in the limit where ray optics is valid correspond locally to approximate plane waves. Evanescent Wave $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An evanescent wave is a nearfield standing wave with an intensity that exhibits exponential decay with distance from the boundary at which the wave was formed. Evanescent waves are a general property of wave equations, and can in principle occur in any context to which a waveequation applies. They are formed at the boundary between two media with different wave motion properties, and are most intense within onethird of a wavelength from the surface of formation. In particular, evanescent waves can occur in the contexts of: optics and other forms of electromagnetic radiation, acoustics, quantum mechanics, and waves on strings. Question in Wave Optics
Wave Optics- Single-Slit Diffraction?
Helium-Neon Laser (Wavelength - 632.8 nm) is sent through a 0.300-mm-wide single slit. What is the width of the central maximum on a screen 1.00 meter from the slit?
I think I should use the equation:
d = (Wavelength * D) / (a)
We can use the following formula:
w = 2λL/a,
where w = width of central maximum
λ = wavelength ( in meters )
L = distance between screen and slit ( in meters )
a = slit width ( in meters )
Thus,
w = 2λL/a
w = 2(632.8E-9)(1)/(3E-4)
w = 0.004218 meters or 4.22 millimeters
[Answer: see above]
