Viridian Green Laser for Pistols?
Has anyone had any experience with this laser?
I'm looking at getting one for my Springfield XD, and wanted to know if they handled well. From the website, it looks like a great product.

Hey John,
Just a few things to consider about green lasers that I didn't see mentioned on the Viridian web site.
1) Green lasers are generally not as durable as their red laser cousins. Green lasers have additional diodes and technology to produce the green laser over commercially available red diodes.
2) Green lasers have shorter battery life than red laser counterparts. (Although the Viridian laser has 4-7 hours which is excellent)
3) Green lasers are more sensitive to temperature and therefore have a more narrow operating range. I did could not find the Viridian Green Laser operating range but Uni-Max publishes their range. The unimax green laser operating range, which is good for a green laser, is 40 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Whereas the red Uni-Max lasers operating range is 10 - 130 degrees Fahrenheit. I have seen lasers dim, temporarily stop working or fail to turn on due to heat dissipation from barrels. Of course this may only be a range/practice issue not a real situation issue as a laser used in a defensive situation would be intially used with a cool unfired gun.
4) The Viridian laser doesn't allow for an additional light mount.
5) Almost any laser mounted a handgun will require a new holster and make concealment a little more cumbersome. (I personally like IWB holsters for concealment).
That said it is definitely true that the green laser is much more visible than the red laser. In addition I have found laser's to be invaluable tools for practicing, observing trigger play and handgun control at the range. However, I disagree with the added deterrent effect as I believe presentation of a pistol regardless of a laser is a strong deterrent.
Unfortunately, I can't share any experience with the Viridian laser but have used crimson trace and Uni-Max. Your best bet is to see if they have a return policy if it doesn't meet your expectations at the range.
Personally, I don't keep a laser on my conceal carry pistol. The two most important additions to my carry pistol for me were a quality Surefire light and a comfortable holster. Good luck.
