Ultraviolet High Power

Have you ever taken a picture of a high voltage corona around power lines?
When it's damp outside, like right before or right after it rains, you can sometimes hear the crackling and hissing of a corona if you stand under a high voltage power line. One night, I very faintly saw a corona around the terminals of a power pole transformer.
Has anyone here ever been able to get a picture of a corona around power lines? With either film or digital? I do want to try it with film sometime...would it maybe work with infrared film? Or are there some kinds of film that are more sensitive to ultraviolet?
I have taken pictures of the corona on my Tesla Coil (yeah, I experiment with high voltage as another hobby). But I've never tried it with power lines.
That's something I want to try sometime.
If you have, please post a link to your pictures and explain how you did it. Thanks!
Never thought of it, but i live next to a power plant in washington so rain shouldn't be a problem. I would imagine to get the shot I would go out at night set up your tripod and take several long exposures. Try it with digital first, then go at it with film so you know how and don't waste your time eating up film not knowing whether you got it.

Ultraviolet $20.66 Rated: NRSynopsis: The vampire legend's gothic trappings are stripped away in Ultraviolet, a six-episode British TV series that brings a distinctly modern slant to an oft-told tale. The setup is accomplished in the first episode, where homicide detective Michael Colefield (Jack Davenport) is recruited into the CIB, an elite and exceedingly covert high-tech government agency dedicated to battling vampires. Colefield's new CIB colleagues include an ex-medical researcher (Susannah Harker), an ex-military man (Idris Elba), and a Catholic priest (Philip Quast). These new comrades in arms are grim, scarred by past vampire encounters and ruthless in their persecution of the undead. While Ultraviolet's vampires eschew tradition and have no apparent fangs, they do bear a few familiar traits. They have no reflection in mirrors, they are immortal, and, of course, they drink human blood. The key to the series' unusual flavor is the absence of supernatural explanations: These vampires are biological parasites, and while the CIB fights to protect mankind from falling one rung down the food chain, the vampires are well-organized, well-funded, and use bioengineering to protect their food supply. Ultraviolet is a heady mix of quickly cut scenes and rat-a-tat dialogue, with the big picture coalescing at a gradual but enticing pace. And while each episode contains some stand-alone material, there is an overall story line that builds toward a firm resolution, making the series especially potent when viewed in order and in its entirety. The two-DVD set contains plot synopses, character profiles, and a glossary of the series' unique jargon, all of which adds greatly to an understanding of the show's complex world. And for those who are left hungry for more of Ultraviolet, there is also an interview with the series' writer-director, Joe Ahearne, who explains, among other things, why only six episodes were made. Gregory BairdThis futuristic British miniseries began when the best friend of Det. Sgt. Michael Colefield (Jack Davenport) suddenly vanished from the altar at his own wedding. Though told not to investigate, Michael unearthed evidence that his pal had transformed into a vampire. This led the hero to a secret government organization, working in cahoots with the Catholic Church to rid the world of a vampiric scourge, using SWAT team tactics and state-of-the-art computer technology (those infected with vampirism could be detected with computer-generated ultraviolet light). Somewhat perversely, the modern-day bloodsuckers tried to maintain their respectable cover by actively supporting charities and worthwhile causes, thereby coming off somewhat more sympathetically than their relentless pursuers. One of the more intriguing aspects of this six-part series was the refusal by the authorites to make any direct reference to vampires; their quarry was always described as "Code 5" or "Leeches." A fascinating blend of traditional British cop drama with Dracula-style melodr |

Ultraviolet (Paperback) $31.63 One of the most ubiquitous items of the 1960s and 1970s, the black light poster represented some of the most imaginative, colorful, and "out there" creativity of the period; Ultraviolet is the first book to ever celebrate this alternative art form. Daniel Donahue, an amateur historian of counterculture, has collected hundreds of vintage blacklight posters and chosen 69 of the best for this volume. Covering some of the more relevant subjects of the period, including Sex, Drugs, Rock ’N’ Roll, Earth Awareness, Black Power, and Astrology, Ultraviolet has been printed with flourescent inks so that the pages will actually glow under black light. This hip volume is a gift from the fifth dimension for anyone interested in alternative culture or graphic design. |

UV LED Flashlight
What is the best kind of light to charge any glow-in-the-dark material?
Would a high powered LED be the best? If so, would it be best in ultraviolet? Please don't pretend to know something you don't.
Most plastic glow-in-the-dark objects do not glow internally, it is a finely divided pigment: copper-doped zinc sulfide (for pale green). The copper sites in zinc sulfide absorb blue and ultraviolet light (mostly high frequency), which creates an excitation in the electronic structure of the solid. In the phosphor of a fluorescent tube or a TV set, that excitation decays back into visible light (always slightly red-shifted in all cases) very quickly. (If you turn off a TV in a totally darkened room, you can see the screen glow in the dark for almost a minute). Copper-doped zinc sulfide can be engineered to decay very quickly (fractions of a second) and brightly. It can also be engineered to have much deeper electronic energy holes so that the conversion of excitation back to light requires hours to climb out - glow in the dark. All in all, it depends on the intensity of the glow produced, the amount of energy stored into the material's lattice and the time of exposure to a high-intensity wavelength. the best source of ultraviolet light to charge your glow in the dark material would be the sun
(its pretty easy to find, and it's free!). Just let your objects in the sun for a while and they should be glowing in the dark in no time!. Glow sticks are different though, they require a loss of energy. So, place your glow sticks in a freezer to charge them.
