Tungsten Lamp Power
What kind of generator would I need for this?
I need to power up to three tungsten lights (1800 total watts), a fan, and possible a household lamp, for approximately four to five hours.
I've never used a generator before. What type would I need (what types are there?) and what considerations should I make when renting one?
You're on the right track. Just add up the total wattage of the stuff you're running. 1800 + the wattage of the bulb in the household lamp + the wattage of the fan (find this by multiplying the voltage by the amp draw). This is your sustained load, but you should probably get more in case you need to run any tools or anything. Just tell the person at the rental place how many watts worth of lighting you need to power and they'll rent you the appropriate generator. Make sure you go by the sustained capacity and not the surge capacity, which is about 20% higher.
