Physics Questions about Interference, Diffraction, and Polarization?
1.Why do sound waves spread out after passing through a partly open door while light eaves make a beam of light that does not spread nearly as much?
2.Suppose you shine white light through a filter that absorbs a certain color of green. What will the spectrum of this light look like after passing through a diffraction grating?
3.Look at an LCD screen through polarizing sunglasses. Explain what you see when you rotate the sunglasses to change the angle of the transmission axis of the polarizing lenses.
1. This is about diffraction (a form of interference). Huygens's principle says that a wave passing a boundary such as an edge of a slit or hole can be considered to form multiple point sources there. The waves from these sources interfere because of unequal path lengths to a screen or a hearer. There may be constructive reinforcement at a large angle from the incident wave direction. When the size of the opening is comparable to the wavelength or a small multiple of it, these points make up a significant portion of the energy passing through, so there is more diffraction spreading. When the opening is much larger than the wavelength, the effect becomes less apparent. This latter condition prevails with light in ordinary situations because of light's very short wavelengths compared to those of sound. So essentially, sound going through a doorway is analogous to light going through a spectrograph slit.
2. The spectrum will show a dark region in the green.
3. Much of the glare we encounter is horizontally polarized, since many glossy surfaces are (e.g., water). Polarized sunglasses block horizontally polarized light in the horizontal position and will pass it when the lenses are one above the other. Similarly, looking at another polarized light source produces the same effect; blockage at one orientation, maximum transmission at 90 degrees to it, and partial transmission at intermediate angles.
