I bought this infrared thermometer article assessing Jode Plank "Hack Lab: laboratory of the hardware" for [...] ([...])

I've used it for about a month, and will work exactly as described. It also comes with a belt holster, which was a bonus. It costs less than comparable, but similar patterns in my local hardware store (Ace Hardware). So far I have not noticed any problems. I hope you do not have to replace batteries for a very long time.

Easy to use. Nice fast - instant- temps. Picks up temps on diverse surfaces including some that would seem tricky, like glass and water though you may try different angles to confirm those but that is just moving it about slightly. No need for on/off switch just hit the trigger and you get a reading then it shuts down automatically and is ready for next use when you need it. 
This is an easy tool to recommend.

Amazingly useful device!

This was probably the most useful tool I've purchased in quite some time. It seems very well made and does exactly what it's supposed to do. It has a very ergonomic feel in my hand, the trigger has just the right amount of tactile feedback, the display is very easy to read, and it's quite accurate. I have used it quite a bit for the last six months and the batteries haven't needed replacing yet. Something especially neat about this infrared thermometer is that you can hold down the trigger and it will instantly update every second. So you can scan it around a region to find the highest temperature if the object or surface isn't flat. I've found some interesting ways to use this thing, such as: 

> Scan the inside temperature of exterior walls to find areas where the insulation is thin. I discovered two electrical outlets on the south side of the house were almost 120 degrees! I took the receptacle cover off and peered through the crack between the box and the drywall only to discover that the fiberglass insulation hadn't been properly wrapped around the receptacle. A little spray foam through the crack did the trick! 

> See how insanely hot your attic is getting on a hot, sunny day. Rather than crawl up there with a thermometer and risk bursting into flames, just crack open the attic access panel from below and shoot it into the attic. I found that a small solar-powered attic fan could reduce the temperature by 20-30 degrees. 

> Awesome for cooking. I always hated candy thermometers because in shallow amounts of liquid you couldn't keep the bulb submerged without it touching the bottom of the pan. And, anything sticky is really hard to remove from a glass thermometer. The Kintrex is instantaneous and non-contact. I've tested it on boiling water numerous times and it comes up exactly at 212F. That's impressive! 

> Determine the insulating capability of window or door glass. During the winter I found that the glass on an older exterior door was reading the same as the outdoor temperature (significant loss of interior heat via conduction), however newer dual-pane glass was 30 degrees warmer than outside. 

The bottom line is that this is more than enough IR thermometer for the vast majority of needs. Don't pay the outlandish price of some of the higher-end units. Buy this and you won't be disappointed (unless you're the one in a thousand who gets a lemon and then writes a negative review about it)!

very accurate and reliable

i bought this because i needed an accurate way of checking the temperature in my bearded dragon tank. digital and analog thermometers can be as much as 20 degrees off so i went with an infrared. this was the best one i could afford and am extremely pleased with its performance. it shows the current temp reading and the last highest reading on the lighted display, whis is very easy to read. it automatically cuts off after 10 seconds of non-use so it's easy on batteries, and comes with a velcro-closure nylon case. powers on with the pull of the trigger and gives immediate readings. if you want a good, cheap thermometer i highly recommend this one.
