I have an auto ranging circuit tester How do i use it to test power to a headlamp bulb?

I know it must be on DC for a car, also can i stick the spikes through wire insulation to find where a break may be?

You could. I have used a safety pin and stuck it through the insulation, then put the meter leads on the safety pins. That way, when you pull the safety pins out, the whole is almost non existent. I would still wrap some black electrical tape around where you are puncturing the insulation though.

You mentioned a headlamp bulb. Why don't you just pull the bulb out and put the leads right where the bulb connects to?
