Why was the slate heap -2C in summer? - evaporation?
A pipe was sticking out of the bottom of a welsh slate waste heap and the temperature inside taken by laser thermometer. It was -2C in summer. As it rarely gets this cold in winter, it can't just be thermal inertia carried from winter. Average annual temperature (and underground temperature) is about 12C. So why so cold? Maybe the breeze through the damp interior of the heap causes evaporative cooling - but could this account for a 10C reduction?
oops, i did mean 14C. It was taken on two days with two different laser thermometers which seemed to be ok with known temperatures. The heap was a huge industrial heap going up the valley. The exposed northern face was 5C on the surface (though it was a cold summer night so was presumably holding that thermal load)
I don't think that this could possibly account for the difference, unless a volatile substance such as ether (or maybe petrol) had been dumped on the slate heap. I suspect the accuracy or precision of the method. Were a number of readings taken and the mean calculated? If so, what was the dispersion? I suggest that you try measuring a known temperature by a similar technique: i.e. use the same thermometer through a pipe of a similar diameter and length.
And I think that you're talking about a 14°C reduction rather than a 10 degree one.

Interesting. Could you try a thermocouple probe? Presumably the thermometer is making some assumption about the emissivity of the surface whose temperature is measured. Note also the paragraph beginning "Flat surfaces, especially polished ones," in the following article.

How do those "light" or "laser" thermometers work?
It's difficult for me to ask this question correctly, because I'm not exactly sure what it is.
I saw a guy at the grocery store the other day pointing a laser or red light thing at some of the product.
I asked him what he was doing, and he said "I have a refrigeration alarm going off, but don't know which case is running warm." And he went on to say that that thing he was holding would take the temperature.
I asked how it worked, and all I got in reply was, "I have no idea."
The light is only for aiming, it does not do the measuring.
The device focuses infra-red emissions from the target area (marked by the laser) onto an IR sensor, the same way as IR cameras can show where the heat loss is on a building.
