5mw Laser Is it illegal to buy a laser pointer ABOVE 5mW in the USA?
I am thinking of buying one of those green laser pointers for my science class. I've seen how the 5wW ones look, but I'd like to get something stronger. I'm thinking maybe a 200mW?
I've seen them on eBay and Dealextreme but I read somewhere that above 5mW in the US is illegal.
So if I order it from somewhere like China would customs just confiscate it?

Generally, a green laser pointer with output power more than 5mW is illegal. And according to FDA, any laser which more than 5mW requires a key-switch interlock and other safety regulations.

Whats the difference between a 5MW and a 10MW laser pen?
Im planning to get a laser pen. But I would like to know what the difference is between them two. Is the 10mw stronger than the 5mw (eg, the laser beam will go further)?
And will the 5mw be able to pop ballons and light a match stick?

The difference between a 5MW and a 10MW laser pen is 5mW
The 10mw laser is twice as much power as the 5mW. Meaning it's brighter and will run the batteries down faster.
And a 10mW laser will only be able to pop a balloon if the tip is sharp. Otherwise the beam will just make the balloon glow.
The only way a 10mW laser could burn something is if there was a short in it, starting a fire in the circuitry itself.
Think of it this way. 10mW is 0.01 watts. A typical light bulb is 100 Watts. That's 10000 less powerful than a lightbulb. A lasers energy is focused though so you don't need a 100W laser to heat something up.
A .5W (500mW) laser may start to get into the range where they can burn things. That's 50 times as powerful as a 10mW laser. This is a Class IV laser and generally must be have a key safety switch. Meaning they usually can't be sold in as a pointer. Of course, each country has it's own laws.
A Class IIIb laser (5–500 mW) can permanently blind you. Most laser pointers are in the class under that...Class IIIa. A 5mW laser is usually a Class IIIa. They can cause eye damage if you stare into them for an extended period of time or focus the beam with optics.
Many of the laser pointers you see that advertise to pop balloons and burn things are tweaked and running the diode at (or pushing it past) it's maximun levels. This quickly reduces the life expectancy of the laser diode.

Laser pens or pointers to give them their correct term are like many things that are on sale for a specific purpose but are used by idiots for another purpose.
Similar to those annoying little motorbikes you see driving around in public parks (that are NOT supposed to be used on public land) laser pointers can be used for the wrong purpose bringing potential danger.
If the bloke that got arrested had caused the pilot of the helicopter to be temporarily blinded by the laser from his pointer then the consequences could have obviously been bad.
I suppose there will be lots of criticism of the Police for taking action on this when the no doubt 'have better things to do' but its a classic case of not being able to do right for doing wrong. If the helicopter had crashed as a result of this blokes stupidity then the Police would have been criticised for not doing anything.
Diode Housing how does my masthead amplifier receive it's operating power source?
I have an "A" series Hills industries masthead amplifier in my new house but the red diode to indicate the power source is off. I have checked the best I can for another power source but can't find one.
The amplifier is switched internally for 15 Volts

how does a diode reduce electromagnetic field created at the household circuit breaker?
i can purchase a copper diode that claims to provide protection against emf where electricity enters the house. advertising says it neutralizes energies. is this likely to be a true claim? thanks.
Sounds like a scam to me. A diode is a P-N semiconductor junction that allows current to flow only in one direction. It effectively acts as a short circuit, like a normal wire, when voltage is positive, and like an open circuit when voltage is negative. Regardless of how the diode is applied, you would need one heck of a diode to handle the standard 2 Amps of a household circuit. Besides, EM fields are not harmful to humans, so far as we can tell. Additionally, the 60Hz standard AC frequency does not interfere with any standard wireless appliances. So regardless, there is no need to "neutralize EM fields" in your home.

Okay, 3 questions, 3 answers.
1) The redness of a laser's output light is not determined by how much power goes into the laser.
A laser can be made to emit red light, with *any* power output. 1mW, 1kW, 1MW. It's still red light, but its brightness will vary according to how powerful the laser is.
2) Yes. Some lasers produce beams. You can also produce other geometries, but linear cavities are the most common.
3) A laser can be designed to produce green light at any power output. 1mW, 1kW, etc.etc. They will generate light with the same wavelength, but the power in the beam is goverend by the engineer and the budget for the project.
