Source Illuminator Power

How to wire a power source selector?

This is very simple i'm sure but for some reason i'm rather confused.

I am making a Infra-Red illuminator and have everything working perfect. The system is powered by a 9V dc current.

To make it more portable, I have installed a secondary switch which will select between DC adapter and 9V battery.

The switch is just a regular 2 way on/off.

Any ideas on how to wire the configuration to select between batt. and adapter?

You need one more diode 1N4007 (cost 10 cents) to do the job if wire it with two terminals ON-OFF switch that you have.
Connection:
Adapter" + " connects to one terminal of ON-OFF switch; other terminal connects to Infra-Red LED anode; cathode connects to "-" of adapter.
9 volts "+" connects to anode of 1N4007; cathode of 1N4007 connects to Infra-Red LED anode; cathode connects to "-" of battery.

Notes: adapter output voltage must higher than battery to let this circuit works.
As switch sets to ON, adapter "+" power up the LED; "+" is blocked by the diode.
As switch sets to OFF, battery "+" through diode to power up the LED.
