Battery Life Silicon Diode Voltage drop?
Hi. If I have a 12VDC Battery with cycle life of 7Ah, will I extend the life cycle, longer battery operation time, if I add a silicon diode and drop the voltage to 11V, as my device can take any voltage between 6-12? The device draws 500mA max Load, how can I calculate the difference in operation time of the battery if it will help dropping the voltage? Thanx
That is an interesting question. If the device behaves like a resistive load, then yes it would. However, a device that will operate over a wide voltage range might well include a built in, series regulator which keeps the current drawn fairly constant over a range of input voltage. You'll need to measure the current with and without to see if you are going to win anything.
You should get about 14 hours @500ma of course.
The other issue is what happens when the battery is nearly flat. Without a diode, the device will keep working when the battery voltage falls to 6v. With a diode, the thing will cut out when the battery voltage falls to about 7 volts.
You need to think about the discharge characteristics of the battery. If the battery voltage falls steadily as it discharges, the extra voltage drop across a diode may mean that a useful amount of energy cannot be extracted before the input to the device falls below minimum..
If it is something like a lead-acid battery which maintains a relatively high terminal voltage until the thing is nearly flat, then it may be a good idea.

Vf of silicon junctions decreases by about 2mV per ºC
assuming your temperatures are in ºC, then the temperature changed by 50ºC and Vf dropped by 100 mV from 0.6 volts to 0.5 volts.
