Silica Gel $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Silica gel is a granular, vitreous, highly porous form of silica made synthetically from sodium silicate. Despite its name, silica gel is a solid. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is purified and processed into either granular or beaded form. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size of 24 angstroms and has a strong affinity for moisture molecules. Silica gel is most commonly encountered in everyday life as beads packed in a vaporpermeable plastic. In this form, it is used as a desiccant to control local humidity in order to avoid spoilage or degradation of some goods. Because of poisonous dopants (see below) and their very high absorption of moisture, silica gel packets usually bear warnings for the user not to eat the contents. Choosing a Good Dehumidifier for your Home
First off, let's take a look at humidity. Water comes in three forms: liquid, vapor, and ice. The measured amount of water vapor in the air is known as relative humidity. If humidity exceeds 100%, moisture will begin to condense from the air. So when the air is holding, for example, half that water that it is capable of, the relative humidity level is 50%
To accurately measure the relative humidity, we use a hygrometer. If you keep your air conditioning unit on all summer and the windows and doors closed, check the relative humidity in various rooms throughout your house with a hygrometer. A hygrometer reading of over 50% shows a definite need for a dehumidifier.
What type of dehumidifier do you need? It depends on your environment. Let's take a look at the most popular types of dehumidifiers available.
The first one we'll look at is called a dehumidifying ventilator. This uses an exhaust fan and a sensor controller. You can adjust the sensor controller so that the when a certain humidity level is reached, the machine will start up. This can be very effective in a basement or crawlspace.
A second type of dehumidifier is a chemical absorbent type. This is most efficient in hot and humid climates. An example of this is silica gel.
Another type is the heat pump. These have a motor fan that draws air through it, two sets of coils, and a control panel. A bucket or drain system compliments it. A good choice as it's very efficient but be warned it does consume a fair bit of power and may be noisy.
One thing to look for is a high efficiency factor rating. Energy Star rated is very desirable when shopping for a dehumidifier. Another nice choice is a frost free option. And, a desirable feature is a built-in humidistat with an automatic shut off.
Imagine you want to move your machine to another room. Rolling it versus "lugging" it would be preferred. Look for a unit with casters. How heavy are these dehumidifiers? An average 60 pint model weighs around 55 pounds. Casters make moving it a lot easier.
There are lots of manufacturers of home dehumidifiers. Popular manufacturer names are Kenmore, Santa Fe, Home Comforts, Soleus, Fridgidaire, and others.
Anticipate to pay anywhere from approximately $140 for a 25 pint dehumidifier to $250 for a 60 pint model.
