Rotating Diode Generator
Converting energy through a diode to an LED?
I'm making a water wheel, which will be spun with a magnet dispensed above copper wire, causing it to rotate.
I have a diode and an LED.
My goal is to take the energy from the waterwheel, convert it, and light up the LED.
Would it be okay to hook the diode up to the copper wire on one end and to the LED on the other end?
So pretty much, can the diode be used as a generator by itself, or do I have to have the diode hooked up to something else in order for the energy to be transferred.
I've been told that I may need a generator, but I can't find one suitable for this experiment I'm conducting.
Please HELP!
Thanks
The copper wire will be coiled on a nail and the end of the water wheel (turned on it's side) has a magnet above the coiled copper wire.
In theory, what you are making is a generator.
Why do you want the diode?
This generator will put out a very small voltage, how low I can't tell. Just connect the LED across the output directly, it may glow dimly.
"dispensed above copper wire" ? If you only have the one wire, you will not get anything measurable from it. You need many turns of wire, and a magnetic structure (a core) to direct the magnetic field from the rotating magnet into it.

Stallcup's® Generator, Transformer, Motor and Compressor, 2011 Edition $55.95 Stallcup’s® Generator, Transformer, Motor and Compressor, 2011 Edition has been fully revised to bring electrical personnel up-to-code on all types of rotating machinery. The new 2011 Edition expertly explains how to select, operate, construct, and maintain the most common types of rotating machinery correctly and efficiently. Divided into three comprehensive parts, Stallcup’s® introduces users to the theory, methods, and applications of generators (Part 1), transformers (Part 2), and motors, controllers and compressors (Part 3). This text fully explains how these devises work and which Code rules apply. In keeping with the previous edition, the text features numerous illustrations to enhance comprehension, clarify complex concepts, and offer hands-on assistance for easier compliance with today’s requirements. |

What is mean by syncroscope?
What syncroscope will do?
Syncronising of geset?
How to improve the power factor with out adding capacitor in a generator?
what is automatic voltage regulator? how does it work?
what is reverse current relay in a generator panel?
what is rotating diode in a generator and what is the purpose of it?
a synchroscope is an equipment that will indicate whether two generators are ready for parallelling. this may digital or analog type.
in sycnchronization of two gensets the voltage of machines must be the same and there should be no phase difference. you will need a synchroscope to verify the state of the machines.
to improve the power factor of an electrical system. you can use a synchronous motor or better yet use your synchronous gensets to correct power factor.
an avr simply regulates voltage of the system.
maybe you are referring to a reverse power relay. this relay protects the prime mover and the system from motorization of a generator.
the rotating diode in a generator is used to rectify the voltage that will be used to excite the generator.
