Very simple bridge, a beam with two pillars. The concrete beam is reinforced with steel rods, cos concrete is strong under compression but has a low tensile strength
a) The beam requires more reinforcement than the pillars. Why?

What exactly is stress?

Does stress cause strain or is it the other way around?

If I apply a force F in the axial direction to a rod/beam.. Is stress equal to F/A (where A is the cross section area)? If so, that would mean, that the stress that develops in a beam/rod is independent of the material characteristics of the rod...

That means, it is the stress that is causing the strain.. Is my reasoning correct?

You're correct. Stress causes strain. Strain is basically elongation (or "deformation") of the rod. Obviously, a rod will not elongate if it's just lying there on a table or something. It will elongate once it experiences an axial stress though.
Be careful though...While the stress itself is F/A (the applied force over the cross sectional area...as you already understood), strain is NOT independent of material characteristics, so be careful. Hope that was a little bit of help.
