What two methods of reverse polarity protection can be employed on a DC/DC converter? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each?
Shunt and series diodes
A series diode presents a constant voltage drop, a drawback, but has the benefit of simply blocking reverse polarity and not requiring replacement of parts to resume function when polarity is corrected, also it works very quickly.
A shunt diode often works by blowing a fuse in the case of reverse polarity, which takes a finite period of time, and requires the fuse be replaced to resume function after correcting polarity, however it has no series voltage drop, which may be an advantage in some cases.
