How to find year and model: TRIUMPH TR? 1960's?

My parents owned an old Triumph convertible that was involved in a minor electrical fire years and years ago. They kept all the parts and have kept them together from move to move, and it has always been a goal of mine to restore it. Well now I have the time to get to work but need to find out the exact model and year.

My mom thinks it is a 1961 TR3 but based on research (comparing pictures and model drawings) I've done I've come to think it's a 1961 TR3B or TR3A. I just can't find out if the TR3 or TR3A had a small 'bench' seat in the back.

Are there any numbers on the engine or transmission I can look for that will help ID the car?

The TR3s have distinct drop down doors. If you are comparing pictures, there's nothing the looks close to a TR2, 3, 3A, 3B. The TR3A (often called a "wide mouth") was produced for only a few years before they moved onto the TR4.

My 1961 TR3A had a small seat pad in the back but hardly room enough for anybody else but a small child. My other 1961 TR3A just had carpet where the seat would be, a modification from the prior owner. Numbers on the engine or transmission isn't going to help, they used the same thing on the TR4s (I had a TR4 and a TR4A as well).

Check the plate in the engine compartment, it's stamped and will give you a VIN number. You can go to some car clubs and request their source to get a build sheet that will tell you everything you need to know including build date and "options", colour, etc..
