how to make 6x5 featheredge panels or to make a jig for them?
does anyone know the easiest way to make 6x5 featheredge panels or to make a jig for them, what size wood to use for the strengthening bars or edges and what type of nails to attach feather boards to rails, is it lath i would use, i need the panels to slot into standard size concrete slotted fench posts. or could i make a jig of some sort so i can make several panels all the same size.
good luck on this one, I hope someone answers your questions but is it worth the time and hassle when you can shop around for discounted panels. Every few months in the uk one of the stores like hombase or b and q has a deal on these panels.
I bought some 18 years ago, used concrete posts, no signs of falling apart yet. So quality is ok. It may well cost you more to make your own.

The 6"-0" x 5'-0" feather edge panels I assume are for the exterior?
Just the same, you can make a jig @ 6" longer than the panel and the same thickness as this will help you stabilize the router.Lock/clamp down the panel at the proper distance equal on each end of jig and equally distanced from the edge of the jig to receive the roller bearing at the tip of the router bit plus half the diameter of the bit. (This is so you don't rout the jig) Turn the panel for each side and repeat the process on each panel. Remember to dial in the bit so that you achieve the thickness of the blade edge of the panel required to be received by the fence post/baluster
There are a number of types of bits you can use. The available bits can be found at your local woodcraft supply house and don't hesitate to ask the guy at the store for the proper bit profile. They should have a sample board of the different types of contoured edges to choose from.
If you have a large amount of panels, I suggest that an inexpensive jig kit may be the way to go.
P.S. Practice on some excess material so that you understand the machine. Take it slow if the contour of the cut is deep and flat as this may kick the the machine back at you or burn the bit. The bit may be pricy.
