Power Diode Mounting
what is a power diode?
i need to answer these questions for a school project:
1) Is it polarised? How do you tell?
2) Special features. Eg. Mounting on PCB, soldering, heat, physical handling.
3) Function of component. What does it do in a PCB.
1. yes, the banded end is negative
2. basically power diodes are pretty sturdy, with some diodes you need a heatsink when soldering but not usually with power diodes because they are larger and can handle more heat.
3. a diodes function is to pass current in only one direction, so when you apply ac to it all that gets through is pulsating dc.

Has anyone built their own wind turbine/generator?
I just need to verify my information, so if you know what you're talking about, I'd appreciate your feedback. I'm mounting the blades onto a permananent-magnet Baldor motor scavenged from an old treadmill. The wires from the motor will run to a set of deep-cycle batteries and keep them charged. The wires from the batteries run to an automotive inverter to change the 12V DC power into 110 household electric, and from there into my shop where I can power my tools. First, is that all correct? And second, I'm told I need a diode in there somewhere so that the batteries don't run the motor instead of the other way around. How does one wire a diode, and what kind of diode do I need?
Things are a bit more complicated than you've planned for.
A diode is like a one way valve for electricity.
You will need one rated for the voltage and current you expect.
The voltage generated will be determined by the speed
at which your generator turns. - Unless you regulate this,
you can damage your battery, or not charge it at all.
(You want to charge that battery at between
12.8 and 14V., no more, no less.)
You'd be far better off using an automotive alternator
excited by the battery through it's built in voltage regulator.
