The General Assembly’s influence relative to the Secretariat and the Security Council has waxed and waned since the inception of the UN. Trace the General Assembly’s power in the past fifty years and explain why their power has gone up and down. What is the relative power of the Assembly today and where are the divisions in its membership?
Well, the UN itself was severly undermined by the war in Iraq.
But right now, I think that they're power is fairly stable. During the Cold War, it was an important forum for negotiations to take place between capitalist and communist, and was powerful.
One major problem is that the major human rights abuses violations of the charter of rights have been repeatedly violated, but the UN is unable to enforce them.
I think that they biggest gap though, in the UN is class, which is between rich and poor. Rich (western nations) have most of the worlds weapons and the best techonology, while poor contains the bulk of the world's population, natural resources, and agriculuture.
