Why do some people say/write lambda for microliters?
Some scientists (it seems to be mostly older people) abbreviate microliter as "λ" instead of "μL". Confused the heck out of me the first time the old guy in our lab told me to take "ten lambdas" of something 'cos I thought of the physics wavelength of light thing.
Does anybody know where this abbreviation came from? I guess it's older than the establishment of SI units...
The symbol lambda is Greek letter for small L (liter) and represents microliter, and the symbol gamma is Greek letter for small G (gram), and represent microgram. These symbols are no long in use.

Help with physics organ pipe?
Hello, my physics teacher must be the worst in the world, he gives us homework without teaching us properly (he reads off the board). First of all what is a fuseau (sorry french). Apparently its lambda / 2. (lambda = wave length). I also don't understand the difference between the fundamental and overtones :S.
Well here's the question if you guys can help:
An organ pipe is 112 cm long. What are the fundamental and first three audible overtones if the pipe is (a) closed at one end, and (b) open at both ends?
Do i use: (Kv) / (2f) this equation where K i think is the number of fuseaux, v the speed of sound im guessing and f the frequency.
All help appreciated. (speed of sound is 340 m/s^2)
And what is this about only doing odd overtones?

And why is f= (2K +1) lambda/2 used for closed pipe, i thought it was always f = v/ (2L /K)
for pipe open at one end-
v=n*lamda
l=lambda/4
n=v/4*l....................fundamental frquency
therfore-
n1=3n
n2=5n
n3=7n........................first three audible overtones
for pipe open at one end-
v=n*lamda
l=lamda/2
n=v/2*l.........................fundamental frquency
therfore-
n1=2n
n2=3n
n3=4n...................first three audible overtones
