Depends on what are you detecting? A photodiode will detect the presence of light. A normal diode could be used to detect and demodulate AM radio transmissions. An LED can detect the presence of a voltage.

How does a photodiode differ from an ordinary semiconductor diode?

Depends slightly on the wavelength of light you are interested in. Silicon is photo-conductive naturally so teh only difference between a Si diode and photodiode would be that you package the photodiode such that the p-n junction can see light. You might make bigger active areas fo photodiode as you'd want to capture as much light as possible while keeping noise sources (leakage current) low.
