What is a transient thermoelastic expansion ?
Well, I have to explain how this biomedical device works: Laser Opto-Acoustic.
Opto-acoustic imaging technology combines optics and acoustics with a goal of improving the accuracy of the cancer diagnosis without the use of ionizing radiation (x-ray). The process starts by illuminating the tissue with laser light of specific wavelengths. Tumors preferentially absorb the light over normal tissue and become slightly heated. A transient thermoelastic expansion causes a tumor to emit a pressure (acoustic) wave. This acoustic wave is then detected by an array of sensors positioned around the periphery of the area of study.
Ok, I understand everything except the tissue-light interaction that cause the acoustic wave to be emitted. The tissue absorbs the laser light, which is energy. It heats, therefore it expands. Now, why does the energy is emited by acoustic waves ? Why not light ?
Can you help me ? Thank you so much.
It will not emit light because it is far too cold.
The sudden expansion pushes on whatever is near it, and this pushing then travels as an acoustic wave.
