I need urgent help on a problem of optics,with thin lenses and two media please help....?


I have a thin biconvex lens with water on its left side (facing its convex surface) and air on its other side. Light (parallel beam from sun) passes from air to water side.

Is the focal length of the lens increased or reduced compared to if the lens had air on both of its sides? Please give reason.

(the lens has focal length of 50cm in air medium only,according to your calculations what would be the new focal length??)

If the water's index of refraction is closer to that of the glass, then there is less refraction (bending) of light rays through the lens. The focal length is where parallel incident rays converge after passing through the lens. If the rays bend less, that point will be farther from the lens, and the focal length is increased by the presence of the water.

After further work on this, I came up with a formula for the focal length of the lens with two different mediums on each surface. I had to make the assumption that the curvature of both surfaces is the same (the total refraction depends on both curvature and the ratio of refractive indices). If the radius of curvature is R, refractive index of glass = ng and of water = nw, the focal length is

f = R*nw/(2*ng - nw - 1)

the same with air on both sides;

f = 2*R/(ng - 1)

Taking ng = 1.5 for crown glass, and f = 50cm,

R = 50/(2*.5) = 50 cm

Then with one side in water and using nw = 1.3:

f = 50*1.3/(3 - 1.3 - 1) = 92 cm

the focal length almost doubles.

EDIT AGAIN: Note that this focal length is defined as the image distance for the object at ∞ (parallel beam). It is not correct for calculating image/object distances or magnification, since the formula 1/o + 1/i = 1/f does not apply.

Basic Information Regarding Intraocular Lens Implants

An Intraocular Lens embed, is a clear synthetic lens inserted by the ophthalmologist after extracting through surgery the spacified natural lens of the eye or cataract. The Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL) takes the place and function similar to the natural lenses in order to focus the beam or brightness to the rear of the eye. The artificial lens has been accessible since the middle of 1960s, but the Food and Drug Administration of the United States did not favor in the use of this implants until 1981. The artificial implant consists of three main components; a round or oval optic and 2 arc-shaped clinging arms, called haptics. Intraocular lens embeds are made up of several materials which include acrylic, silicone and polymethylmethacrylate. Manufacturers have different designs of the intraocular lenses intended for implantation 0 sit forward to the iris, the tinted part of the eyes.
