An object is placed 18.0 cm from a screen.
A) at what two points between object and screen may a converging lens with a 3.00 cm focal lenght be placed to obtain an image on the screen?
B) what is the magnification of the image for each position of the lens?
The imaging equation is
1/do + 1/d1 = 1/f
f = 3.00 cm
d0 + di = 18.0 cm
Substitute for do:
1/(18.0 - di) + 1/di = 1/3.00
di + (18.0 - di) = di*(18.0 - di)/3
54 = 18.0*di - di²
di² - 18.0*di + 54 = 0
di = 3.8, 14.2
di = image distance, or the distance from lens to the screen.
So the lens may be placed 3.8 cm from the screen, or 14.2 cm from the screen.
If the lens in 3.8 cm from the screen, the magnification is di/do = 3.8/14.2 = 0.27
If the lens is 14.2 cm from the screen, the magnification is di/do 14.2/3.8 = 3.74

Optics-what type of lens set up do I need to view an object which is close up, whilst my eyes are at infinity?
The application is an in-helmet screen for displaying information to a motorcylcist. I want my eyes focussed at infinity since this would prove much safer than having to adjust my gaze every few seconds. A HUD is too complicated and expensive - a suitable lens to view a hacked mobile phone screen (say) would work really well. Any ideas?
A lens with a positive diopter, i.e. a convex lens. It sounds like you are sort of reinventing the bifocal with a different position for the reading lens.
