Optical Polarization

Polarized window where polarity depends on voltage?
Looking for an optical element that performs the same function as polarized film, except either direction of polarization is electrically controlled, or its polarization can be turned on and off (then I could just use two of them to get the same effect). I thought I heard of something like that - similar to an lcd in concept.
LCD is the one. Liquid Crystal Display. By putting electrical force i it, it polarizes the liquid leaving light through only in the same polarized direction.
Have you thought of using film and having it turned electronically? If two films are plirized in a 90 degree angle from each other, they do not let light through it either. Try with polaroid sunglasses, remove them from the frame, put them on top and turn them.
Good luck with it!

Polarization of Light $626.37 Understanding the polarization of light is becoming increasingly important in the study of laser physics, nonlinear optics, and optical waveguides. This book covers the basics of polarized light representation, the propagation of light through anisotropic media, the mathematical formalism used, and induced anisotropy, devices which use induced or natural anisotropy and polarization phenomena in guided optics. Discusses both fundamentals and applications in a range of practical devices. Gives a global view of the state of polarization representation. Optical Polarization of Molecules $106.74 This book explains the theory and methods by which gas molecules can be polarized by light, a subject of considerable importance for what it tells us about the electronic structure of molecules and properties of chemical reactions. Starting with a brief review of molecular angular momentum, the text goes on to consider resonant absorption, fluorescence, photodissociation and photoionization, as well as collisions and static fields. A variety of macroscopic effects are considered, among them angular distribution and the polarization of emitted light, ground state depopulation, laserinduced dichroism, the effect of collisions and external magnetic and electric field effects. Most examples in the book are for diatomic molecules, but symmetrictop polyatomic molecules are also included. The book concludes with a short appendix of essential formulae, tables for vector calculus, spherical functions, Wigner rotation matrices, ClebschGordan coefficients, and methods for expansion over irreducible tensors. Polarization Holography (Hardcover) $275.91 Current research into holography is concerned with applications in optically storing, retrieving, and processing information. Polarization holography has many unique properties compared to conventional holography. It gives results in high efficiency, achromaticity, and special polarization properties. This books reviews the research carried out in this field over the last 15 years. The authors provide basic concepts in polarization and the propagation of light through anisotropic materials, before presenting a sound theoretical basis for polarization holography. The fabrication and characterization of azobenzene based materials, which remain the most efficient for the purpose, is described in detail. This is followed by a description of other materials that are used in polarization holography. An in-depth description of various applications, including display holography and optical storage, is given, and the book concludes with perspectives for the future. This book is an important reference for researchers. |

Elementary Polarization Spectroscopy $326.01 This book offers an elementary introduction to optical spectroscopy with polarized light. It is written at a level suitable for undergraduate students in chemistry and undergraduate or graduate students in related disciplines such as biochemistry, biology, chemical engineering and materials science. It emphasizes the qualitative concepts and deemphasizes mathematics, yet provides sufficient information and practical hints for experiments. With this book in hand, anyone who can measure an ordinary infrared, ultraviolet or visible absorption or fluorescence emission spectrum can measure a polarized one as well and learn far more about the sample. Circular Polarization $62.13 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In electrodynamics, circular polarization of an electromagnetic wave is a polarization where the tip of the electric field vector, at a fixed point in space, describes a circle as time progresses. If the wave is frozen in time the electric field vectors describe a helix along the direction of propagation. Circular polarization is a limiting case of the more general condition of elliptical polarization. The other special case is the easiertounderstand linear polarization. Polarization (Waves) $66.91 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Polarization is a property of certain types of waves that describes the orientation of their oscillations. Electromagnetic waves such as light exhibit polarization; acoustic waves (sound waves) in a gas or liquid do not have polarization because the direction of vibration and direction of propagation are the same. By convention, the polarization of light is described by specifying the orientation of the waves electric field at a point in space over one period of the oscillation. When light travels in free space, in most cases it propagates as a transverse wavethe polarization is perpendicular to the waves direction of travel. Vacuum Polarization $66.91 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In quantum field theory, and specifically quantum electrodynamics, vacuum polarization describes a process in which a background electromagnetic field produces virtual electronpositron pairs that change the distribution of charges and currents that generated the original electromagnetic field. It is also sometimes referred to as the self energy of the gauge boson (photon). Vacuum polarization was observed experimentally in 1997 using the TRISTAN particle accelerator in Japan. Racial Polarization $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Racial polarization is the process whereby a population, the individuals of which have varying degrees of diversity in their ancestry, is divided into separate, and distinct (from each other) racial groups. In Bermuda, around 55 of the population is identified as black, followed by 34 white (further subdivided into a Britishdescended majority and a Portuguesedescended minority) and the remained mixed or other (chiefly Asian). Politically the territorys two political parties are often described along racial lines, the United Bermuda Party (UBP) being supported by Bermudas white minority, while the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) is supported by the black majority. In terms of popular support, few whites would not vote for the UBP (In an April 2009 poll, some 85 of whites would vote for the party, while only 4 would vote PLP), while black voters favoured the PLP (in the aforementioned poll, 62 of blacks would vote PLP, 14 UBP). Polarized filter (C-PL)
Do the magnetized snap on lenses and filters for compact digital cameras actually work?
I want to get a wide angle lens, telephoto lens, and a polarization filter for my compact. Do these really work? And how much more zoom can I expect for a camera with 4x optical zoom to start with? How strong is the magnetized ring that holds the lenses and filters in place?
Here are the lenses and filters I am talking about:

Also, should I trust an underwater container like this if I want to take underwater pictures with my digital. Does it work?

It works as good as the camera... so that is your answer
Don't expect professional quality stuff from this.
