Optical Convex Estimating the focal length of a convex lens?
I'm working on a lenses and optical instruments lab and this is one of the questions I must answer:
"What is a quick way to estimate the focal length of a convex lens without carrying out any calculations?"
I know there are several ways--but could you just estimate it by drawing a ray diagram, or would that not work unless you were already given some other distance information to compare the focal length to?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Hold it up to your eye and look at something far away, when the image goes totally blurry you have the lens approximately at it's focal length away from your eye.
A more accurate method would be to focus a distant light, the sun works. Where the focused spot is the smallest is a focal length distance away from the lens. You can also use a flashlight to simulate the distant light.
