The cables are actually semi-floating deep underwater (neiutral bouyancy), but not always resting on the bottom (they are on the bottom near the shores (the neutral bouyancy thing only works for the target depth). This keeps the cables shorter (less relay transmitters and therefore less power requirements = less costs). Therefore, they avoid the trench bottom where they would experience much more heat stress.

As for longevity of the cables, service ships regularly ride the cable along the entire route to maintain/fix/clean the cabling and relay equipment. Multiple cables and routes ensure service outages are minimized.

An optical fiber connector enables quicker connection and disconnection by terminating the end of an optical fiber and these types of connectors can pass light easily for that they are mechanically coupled. Many types of optical fiber connectors are available. Dimensions and methods of mechanical coupling make main difference.
