Lightning affects optical cables (fiber optic cables)???
My home uses optical cables for TV. Whenever the weather is bad, people tell me to disconnect the cables from the TV. Does lightning affect my TV when using optical cables? (Lightning affects our TVs if we use the antenna connected)
no, fiber optic cables are not affected by any outside interference, but disconnecting you tv is the correct thing to do. this is because the tv signals you recieve may draw lightning to your house (and lightning disrupts the tv signals) and when it strikes, it may overload the electrical system causing a very large power surge and possibly damage to your tv.

Optical communications: making the link
can someone please describe the how light travels into and within an optic fiber using the simple ray theory?
I need help understanding the mechanism for the transmission of light through and within an optical fiber using simple ray theory to describe it. I plan to just get a grasp of understanding about this and then figure it out in more detail later.

it works on the principle of total internal reflection of light...the fibre has 2 layers....inner denser (optically speaking) and outer rarer...the light ray just zig zags through by reflection....
