Non Contact Laser

Please tell me the non contact methods of measuring height of humans.?
Ultrasonic method is what I know. I want to know if it is safe to use inductance and capacitence sensors for this purpose. How safe are the laser distance sensors for this?
Here’s is a embodiment of a shadow method mentioned above.
You can have a gate (like a doorway or security gate at the airport). On one side of a gate there is an infrared light source (IR LED). On the other end there is a vertical string of IR detectors. The detectors would be, say 1cm apart, but they could be closer together or further, depending on your desired measurement accuracy. When there is no person in a gate, all of the IR detectors see the light from the LED. When there is a person in the gate, some of the detectors at the bottom of the string will be shaded from the light source, and you can determine the height of the person from the number of shaded detectors.

Laser Scanning with NDI Laser Scanner
measuring the distance in a murky substance?
I need to measure the oval track of the end of a shaft inside a 10m diameter tub with 3-phase substance.
It is impossible to use any sort of visual, optic or laser technology because the substance is not clear, nor can I use ultrasonic since the substance is 3-phase and non-uniform. Last option to me would be to use magnetic, but the 10m diameter of the tub makes that kind of impossible.
Does annyone have an idea of how I can measure the oval track of the shaft end?
Oh, the substance is also acidic, so the measurement will probably have to be done non-contact.
Well, given that I don't know what 'the oval track of the end of a shaft' means, I might be totally off base here. But, I'm going to guess it means you have a shaft, and it's... moving in an oval. And you want to know the dimensions of the oval.
So here are some ideas. Everything is clear at some wavelength. Could your substance be clear in the infrared. If so, use an infrared laser instead of a visible one. There are also microwave lasers (masers), that you could think about, though detecting them might be a pain.
How about radar?
How about an antenna. You could transmit at some frequency on the shaft and pick up on two detectors (or more) outside the tub, and use those signals to "triangulate" the location of the emitter. You could probably even do this with a strong magnet and a sensitive detector, but you may be right that the 10m would require too sensitive a detector.
Well, I bet these would be better ideas if I had some idea what you were trying to measure. And maybe some idea what your monetary constraints are.
