Medical lasers: diagnosing disease, treating disease, curing disease
Mixing over the counter drugs and perscription drugs for real medical purpose?
Background: I had Co2 laser surgery on my foot which I'm on antibiodics and ibuprofen with codine my doctor sys is fine to mix. I've also got a nasty cold going on so I wanted to take robitussin and nyquil to help me sleep. Is this safe? It's def not a continuious thing, I just REALLY need to sleep tonight.
Look at the Robitussin and NyQuil list of ingredients. There are a bunch of different types so I am not sure which one you have.
Typically (if not always) there are MULTIPLE medications. You need to make sure you are not doubling up.
Drugs in NyQuil (varies by specific NyQuil):
acetaminophen
doxylamine
dextromethorphan
pseudoephedrine- found in Vicks NyQuil D
phenylephrine- found in Vicks NyQuil Sinus
Drugs in Robitussin (varies by specific Robitussin):
guaifenesin
dextromethorphan
phenylephrine- Robitussin Cough & Cold CF, Robitussin Cough & Cold Night Time
pseudoephedrine- Robitussin Cough & Cold D
chlorpheniramine- Robitussin Cough & Cold Long-Acting
diphenhydramine- Robitussin Cough & Cold Night Time
I assume the ibuprofen and codeine are separate drugs? Are you absolutely sure the codeine is just codeine and it is not mixed with acetaminophen (Tylenol)? If the prescription says APAP that means it has acetaminophen and you should NOT take anything else with acetaminophen.
You need to pick either NyQuil OR Robitussin.
To find the best thing that will help you sleep look for the ingredients diphenhydramine or doxylamine. Chlorpheniramine is not as good but it should help.
AVOID anything with pseudoephedrine and if possible avoid phenylephrine.
Since NyQuil and Robitussin are more/less the same just use the ONE that ideally has diphenhydramine or doxylamine and does NOT have pseudoephedrine.
You don't need to take anything with dextromethorphan (it suppress caught but you already take codeine and it is far more effective for cough).
Make sure you do NOT take anymore than 1,000 mg of acetaminophen at one time or more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in a day. There needs to be at least 4hrs between taking acetaminophen.
The maximum dose at one time for medication is:
acetaminophen 1,000 mg
chlorpheniramine 4 mg
dextromethorphan 20 mg
phenylephrine 10 mg
guaifenesin 400 mg
pseudoephedrine 60 mg
doxylamine 25 mg
diphenhydramine 50 mg (you can take up to 100 mg at one time but I would not at all recommend it).
If you have any Benadryl (diphenhydramine) just take that.
So be careful don't take too much, the codeine should help you sleep, and overall NyQuil is better for sleep, particularly if it has doxylamine.
