a zener diode has a reverse breakdown voltage of 14 Volts,with a maximum load current of 70mA and an unstabilised supply voltage of 28 volts . Calculate a suitable value of a limiting resistance
What is the minimum and maximum voltage out of the supply? I'll assume 24 min, 32 max, you can change the numbers if you need to.
What is the minimum and maximum zener voltage? they are usually 5%, so that is 14.7, and 13.3 volts.
What minimum current do you want through the zener? A higher value will help regulation, but increase heat. I'll pick 10 mA.
Total current will be 80 mA
R = (24–14.7)/80 = 116Ω at worse case. Use 110Ω.
Assume 5%, so min/max is 104.5Ω and 115.5Ω
Current through resistor at low line, high zener, this is the min
I = (24–14.7)/115.5 = 80.5 mA
Current through resistor at high line, low zener, this is the max
I = (32–13.3)/104.5 = 179 mA
worse case power in resistor
P = I²R = 0.179²104.5 = 3.3 watts, use a 10 watt unit.
worse case power in zener
P = I²R = 0.179*14.7 = 2.6 watts, use a 5 watt unit. with a heat sink.
