They released five albums: Diodes (1977), Released (1979), ActionReaction (1980), Survivors (1982), and Time/Damage Live 1978 (2010). One of the first Toronto bands playing that style of music, The Diodes helped foster the scene in the city. Along with manager Ralph Alfonso, The Diodes opened the first Canadian punk nightclub in 1977, called Crash n Burn, where many of the citys punk bands at that time played. The first band to play the club was The Nerves, on a double bill with The Diodes. The club was closed at the end of the summer of 1977 due to complaints by the Liberal Party of Ontario (the principal tenants of the building). In this book, I have optimized the growth of n and pGaN films, and high quality InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) on sapphire (0001) substrate by a low pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition and have fabricated high brightness InGaN/GaN MQW lightemitting diodes (LEDs) under optimum conditions. To improve quantum efficiency which is generally poor in the conventional rectangularshaped QWs due to spatial indirect recombination induced by internal piezoelectric field, we proposed a possibility of quantum dot (QD) engineering with triangularshaped band structure in the InGaN/GaN QWs. The structural and optical properties of the InGaN/GaN MQWs with different threading dislocation densities were also investigated. The effects of Sidoped nGaN and Mgdoped pGaN layers on the electrical and optical properties of the InGaN/GaN MQW LEDs were investigated and optimized under various growth parameters. Ideal Diodes Reduce Power Waste In Battery Systems

A diode’s electricity conducting direction is called its forward direction and its blocking direction is called its reverse direction.  Solid state diodes made of silicon exhibit a drop in voltage when forward conducting.  Standard silicon diodes exhibit a forward voltage drop of 0.50 to 0.70 volts in the forward direction.  Schotkey silicon diodes exhibit a forward voltage drop of 0.25 to 0.30 volts in the forward direction.  Power loss in the diode is roughly equal to the forward current multiplied by the forward voltage drop.  Thus a battery which supplies 10 amps through a silicon diode with a forward voltage drop of 0.50 V will exhibit 5 watts of power lost to heat.

Ideal diode circuits permits today’s designer to replace silicon diodes with a low resistance N-Channel Field Effect Transistor (N-FET).  Implemented within a small integrated circuit package, the ideal diode circuit monitors the voltage drop across the source and drain of an N Channel FET.  The circuit turns the N-FET on and off as required to permit unidirectional current flow  -  just like a solid state diode, but with far less power loss.  Today’s modest N-Channel FETs have an on-time drain-source resistance of 0.005 ohms.  Such a device when used with a 10 Amp battery system would exhibit a power loss of ((10 * 10) * 0.005) = 0.5 W.
