Liquid Crystal Head
grade 7 Chemistry particle model question, HELP?
Hello, I have this homework booklet that has to be in for tomorrow or you get a big fat F, I am really stuck on 2 of my questions
1) Use the particle model to explain why both small and large crystals of the same substance have the same shape
2) Liquids take the shape of their containers and they can be poured. Use the particle model to explain these properties.
I know these might seem easy but I just cant get my head around it!!
Any one who helps me will be a life saver!! REMEMBER I am only in 7th grade, so no complicated answers

Ok, this is from poor memory, however:
1) crystals of the same type are made of the same substances, the size they are just depends on the time the took to cool. Therefore the structure of the atoms is the same no matter what the size
2) molecules in a liquid state are held together by weak intermolecular force, therefore the shape they take can be easily modified, however the molecules don't break, i.e. H(2)0 will still be H(2)O, but just in a different place. They can be poured/modified to the container shape as the bonds break and reform to different molecules when a force is introduced

Optics of MonoDomain Liquid Crystal Displays $167.53 We investigate the optical properties of liquid crystal devices whose dark states are optically compensated to give minimum transmittance. Firstly, the effect of multiple internal reflections on the extinction ratio of perfectly compensated liquid crystal devices is studied. We find the previously unexplained wavelength dependence of light leakage in an ideally compensated device is caused by the interference of the internally reflected ordinary and extraordinary waves. Secondly, we study the offaxis light transmission characteristics of the bright state of common liquid crystal displays including their luminance and color properties. Our research shows there is an unexpected universal shape of the offaxis light transmittance in its bright state, regardless of what liquid crystal mode is used. Thirdly, we have studied the offaxis light transmission properties of the bright state in Picell devices as a function of the white state director configuration. Finally, we explore the phase compensation of the dark states in LCDs, and find that there is a limitation for the compensation of a uniaxial layer even in the most simple director configuration.
