i'm thinking about buying a new laptop for Nait DMIT program

You can run Maya on a very low-end computer without a decent graphics card if you disable Hardware Acceleration completely. I've done that a number of times, on old hardware, just for fun. I think I paid perhaps $125 for such a box. You need windows XP 32 bit (or Fedora and a minimum of 1 GB RAM and A LOT of patience. You'll find that Maya is slow as molasses, it will crash when you make an object with more than 1000 faces, and you'll have lots of strange glitches that require restarting each hour or even more often than that. I guess what I'm trying to tell you is that the lowest end spec, will give you a truly horrible experience with Maya. You're not going to run Maya on the cheap. It will be a complete waste of money, because you'll soon run to the store to get a decent machine anyway. Save up until you can afford something that works.
