The distance between earth and the moon is 3.8 x 10^8 m. A pulse of laser light aimed at the moon bounces back to earth. How do I show that the round trip home for the light is 2.5 seconds?

Well, velocity (v) equals the space covered (s) divided by the period of time (∆t), like in the equation:
v = s / ∆t

But what we want is to confirm the time the laser beam takes to hit the moon and return to Earth, so the space covered will be the distance between the Earth and the moon multiplied by two because of the going and the coming back to Earth (s = 3,8 x 10^8 x 2 = 7,6 x 10^8m). Also we have to put the equation in order to the period of time, like this:
v = s/∆t (=)
(=) ∆t = s/v

As we also know that the velocity of light in vacuum (or in space) is 3,0 x 10^8 m/s, that Moon doesn't have an atmosphere and that Earth's atmosphere can be despised, then we just have to replace the terms for the values and confirm the equality:

2,5 = (3,8 x 10^8) / (3,0 x 10^8) (=)
(=) 2,5s = 2,5s
