What exactly is the difference,?

In a light emitting diode and a light bulb? Please keep your answer simple as possible I don't know much about electronics, thanks.
How much electricity do they use in comparison to a small light bulb?

A LIGHT BULB is an ELECTRICAL device.
an LED is an ELECTRONIC device.

A light bulb is made of a material that was designed to produce light (and heat!) when an electrical current is run through it. That material has been tungsten, but there are other materials being used that are more "energy conscious".

An LED is a semiconductor device, made up of special minerals that give of light but very little heat when an electrical current is passed through them.

BUT -- a standard light bulb ALSO gives off a lot of heat. this represents wasted power. you can't SEE heat! A light bulbs purpose is to produce LIGHT, so any HEAT generated is wasted energy.

In use, a standard 60Watt light bulb takes about 1/2 AMP (0.500 amps) of current at 120 Volts. 60 Watts is a pretty hefty use of current -- and a good portion of this is used to generate heat.

an LED take about 0.020 amps of current at 1.5 volts -- or about 0.03 watts of power. a rally significant saving in power -- AND, an LED can be run off a flashlight battery!

Now, an LED doesn't give of AS MUCH light as a 60Watt light bulb, but an LED DOES give off as much as a small flashlight bulb -- and without the heat. So LEDS are GREAT substitutes for small light bulbs where low power use is very important.

AND . . . .Since LED don't have the wires inside, they almost never burn out! BONUS!
