Light Beam What would the Universe look like if you were on a beam of light?
Of course a beam of light crossing the known observable Universe would take a while, but time dilation would reduce the time to very close to zero. What would an observer see? White sky? Dark sky? Nothing at all? Which factors are primary and are any insignificant? Could one see gravity at that speed?
You probably already know about the time dilation effects of increased velocity. When v=c, the relativistic correction term gamma (1/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)) goes to infinity.
That means that time stops, and all lengths go to zero. You appear to be traveling infinitely fast through an infinitely small space. You'd be everywhere at once in a universe without any time.
Gravity does apply to light, from our sub-c perspective, and if you put yourself in a photon's place the photon seems to be traveling through straight lines in a curved universe (as do we all: the circular orbit of the earth around the sun is really just a straight line in a non-Euclidean universe). But from the photon's perspective, all distances go to zero, or infinity, or both, depending on how you do the math.
It doesn't actually take time for the photon to cross the universe, from the photon's perspective. In fact, there's a charming theory that says that since the photon is its own anti-particle, and anti-particles behave exactly like ordinary particles going backwards in time, that the entire universe really is only one photon, bouncing backwards and forwards in time. From that perspective, "a photon's perspective" would be to simply be the universe.
