Lens Eye Telescope
Do you think this telescope is any good for a beginner?
I spotted a telescope for quite a good price at a local store.
It is an Optus Telescope and the spec is as follows:
EQ - 7 Mount
Magnification 35x - 234x
Objective Diameter approx 76mm
Focal Length 700mm
5x24 Viewfinder
3 Eye pieces: 9mm, 12.5mm & 20mm
1.5 erecting lens
3 x Barbor lens
It also includes the astronomy software Cartes du Ciel
It is going for about £60, what do you think?
No -- this is a poor choice for a beginner's scope (or for any purpose). The main mirror is too small, the mount shakes like jelly, and it comes with useless accessories like the erecting lens and Barlow lens. You'll just be wasting your money totally on a useless piece of junk. Cartes du Ciel is a good program, but it's available free on the internet.

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:

How to Buy a Telescope : Telescope Buying Guide: Eyepieces
Physics lens question!?
Mars subtends an angle of 8.0 multiplied by 10-5 rad at the unaided eye. An astronomical telescope has an eyepiece with a focal length of 0.040 m. When Mars is viewed using this telescope, it subtends an angle of 3.10 10-3 rad. Find the focal length of the telescope's objective lens.

For telescopes the magnification M = θ'/θ = -f1/f2 Where θ' is the angle in telescope, θ is the unaided angle, f1 is the focal length of the object and f2 is the focal length of the eyepiece.
Therefore M = 3.10x10^-3/8.0x10^-5 = 38.75
So f1 = f2*M = 0.040m*38.75 = 1.55m
