Laser Test
Do you think Brother laser printers make fewer carcinogenic emissions than those tested in a recent study?
A recent Australian study showed that some HP laserjet printers, though not all models, emit high levels of carcinogenic particles, worse than cigarettes - and also Toshiba and other makes. I suppose Brother laser printers have a different toner technology because they have replaceable drums as well as cartridges, so perhaps they are safer to be around than those that tested high. Is there any contributor with technical knowledge to comment on that? (Particularly Brother HL-1450, because I'm sitting right next to one!)
Other printers in the test included Canon and Ricoh. HPLaserjet 4050 series were mentioned as having no such emissions, although the 4250 do.
If you read more than one "OMG we're all going to DIE" article about the so called problem you will find out that it isn't that big a deal. Yes, a poorly maintained printer or one which has had toner spilled in it may release carbon dust to the air. The brand doesn't have a lot to do with it. A relative handful out of millions of printers were tested. And yes, we are all going to die (eventually, life is 100% fatal ).

Laser test
If I were to use a 50mW green laser, Would I need goggles?
I'm not planning on looking at it directly, i'm planning test it by popping balloons, lighting a match.
Would I still need goggles?
Find out if it has an infrared filter in the front... look at the spec. sheet.
If it does, you should be OK without goggles. But be careful. My 30mW is HELLA bright, even the diffuse reflections from light coloured object can dazzle me for a minute or two.
If it doesn't have an IR filter, and many cheaper chinese built ones don't, then you definitely need IR blocking goggles, because even an extremely short exposure to an infrared-containing beam could burn a hole in your retina. You won't see the same again.
However... the infrared radiation is the stuff that burns, lights matches, pops balloons. So if you want your laser to do all that, you'll be looking at buying one without a filter, or taking the filter out.
It's up to you. Be careful though. You can't fix a burnt retina, that shit is permanent.
