Laser Photonics Just how do Photonics operate computer systems using nothing but light?
It would help to know how Photonics work.
I understand that they mostly involve lasers, manipulation of light, and such. But how does that help me operate a computer?
Are we talking solar power here or what?
No spam, pl0x
Link, that makes sense, but are you saying that computers still need electronics and they can't run completely off light?
Good answer, frank.
You're both the best answer so I'm putting it to vote. Good luck! Thanks
Computers operate on base 2 binary. Everything is ones and zeroes. If you can build a light that can turn on and off, and you can sense if the light is on and off, you can transmit ones and zeroes over a distance. Computers have to do so many calculations that they need very small lasers.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) is a notforprofit association with headquarters in Paris, France. EPIC serves the photonics community through a regular series of workshops, market studies and partnering. EPIC focuses its actions on LEDs and OLEDs for lighting, optical fiber telecommunications, laser manufacturing, sensors, photovoltaics and photonics for life sciences. EPIC coordinates its activities internationally through its membership in the International Optoelectronics Association. EPIC was founded in 2003 by five companies: Aixtron, CDT, Osram, Philips, and Sagem. Today, more than 80 companies, research laboratories and universities are members of the consortium. The membership works together to execute the mission by proposing and implementing influential initiatives of significant impact on the industrial landscape. The strength of EPIC comes from its capacity to represent the European photonics industry with a clear and articulate voice. Industry associations such as EPIC have a key role to play in identifying market opportunities and in helping their members to work together to capture the opportunity. This book is the first authored in the area of microwave photonics. It presents an overview of techniques developed in the last 30 years in microwave photonics. The topics covered include: photonics generation of microwave signals, photonics processing of microwave signals, photonics distribution of microwave signals, photonic generation and distribution of UWB signals, photonics generation and processing of arbitrary microwave signals, photonic true time delay beamforming for phased array antennas, photonics-assisted instantaneous microwave frequency measurement, and photonic analog-to-digital conversion. Existing books are edited collections of articles.
This book gives a fascinating picture of the state of the art in silicon photonics and a perspective on what can be expected in the near future. It is composed of a selected number of reviews authored by world leaders in the field and is written from both academic and industrial viewpoints. An indepth discussion of the route towards fully integrated silicon photonics is presented. This book will be useful not only to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers but also to graduate students who are interested in the fields of microphotonics and optoelectronics. Unexplored realms in the world of laser- laser marking
The new world and its development in the arena of science has brought in new and better opportunities for man and his coming generations where technology will certainly play a very significant role in determining a bright and prosperous future. The circumstances today are such that humans are completely depended on machines and gadgets to adhere to even basic living conditions. Imagine even a single day without these machines who are more or less part and parcel of your routines like the geysers in your bathroom, the ceiling fans, the Air conditioners, the room heaters etc. It's practically impossible to run away from such problems without perfect solutions to them. Besides this information technology and computers also play a very important role in our lives. Information technology involves more than just computer literacy; it also takes into consideration how computers work and how these computers can further be used not just for information processing but also for communications and problem solving tasks as well. Thus this arena has progressed by leaps and bounds.
Laser systems with high-powered fiber lasers, portable hand held laser marking systems are just a few examples of Laser Photonics' advanced, innovative, latest generation laser systems, processes and technologies which have carved its own niche in the market. For industrial manufacturing applications the technique of Laser Cutting is especially used because of its high quality surface finish. This technique is preferred because in comparison to mechanical cutting it offers easier work holding and reduced contamination of work piece which is where its advantage lies. A common technique for economic settings short series and definitive engraving on various objects or plates, made in metal or plastic according to your needs is possible by mechanical engravers who dig into the material with a mill directed by graphic conception software and offer quality results. Thus the new explored world of strong electromagnetic waves or laser offers many unexplored realms to all you tech savvy people.
Our world today has changed a great deal where now things those were once done manually or by hand have now become computerized operating systems, which simply require a single click of a mouse to get a task completed in fraction of seconds. The PCs in our homes, cell phones, fax machines, pagers, email and internet have all not only become an integral part of our very culture but also play an essential role in our day to day activities.
